Review: Paraworld Zero- Matthew Peterson

Hey!~

Okay this book took me forever to read but not because it was bad...it was a PDF book.

Title: Paraworld Zero

Author: Matthew Peterson

Summary: Simon Kent is just an ordinary 12 year old trying to cope with the loss of his parents and the bullies at school . . . or so he thinks. After meeting an outspoken girl with strange hair that changes colors with her mood, he is swept into a futuristic world filled with dragonlike creatures, vast technology, and enslaved giants. But Simon also stumbles upon a secret: He can perform magic in this parallel world! While fighting mystical creatures, unraveling an ancient mystery, and even experiencing his first kiss, Simon discovers that he, an outsider from Earth, is the only person who can save the high-tech planet from an impending doom.

My Review: As I said before I got this book from Matthew Peterson as an E-book. Because of this it took awhile for me to start it, but when I did start I seriously couldn't stop. It was like my eyes where glued to the screen. Sure I had to pee really bad and my laptop was making a funky wirring noise from being on so long. But I told Dora (my laptop's name...long story) she could blow up as soon as I was finished with Paraworld Zero. I am deeply impressed with this book. I am a huge Harry Potter fan and a honest Star Wars fan and this book combines what I love of both of them...Magic and Intergalactical stuff. I was so disappointed when it ended I really hope Mr. Peterson gets a new publisher soon because I for one cannot wait for book two (check out Finished Writing Book 2 in the Parallel Worlds Series! where he updates us on his Myspace Blog). It's funny and light but at times deals with slavery and other deep issues. I've read a lot about Paraworld Zero's audio book so I plan on hunting it down (I love audio books, especially the HP ones...I love Jim Dale!). I also plan on buying the paperback version of the book so I can lend it to all my friends. I have a feeling I'm going to be re-reading this one quite a bit.

Don't forget to Comment...especially if you plan on reading it!

And don't forget to Vote on my poll which is on my sidebar---->
Thanks a Bunch!

(Edited on 1-2-14: I've been going through my reviews and editing them for typos but I noticed that I say my laptop's name is Dora and the reason behind it is a long story. I WISH I WROTE THE STORY BECAUSE THAT'S NOT MY COMPUTER'S NAME! It's Sisky Business Bass Wiz (after the bassist in the Academy is, my best friend and I went through a phase during in high school in which we named our electronics after corresponding band members). The second thing I noticed was that there STILL isn't a second book and that makes me sad)

Review: Haunted- Judith St. George

Hey!~

This Review will be short and sweet...and to the point!

Title: Haunted

Author: Judith St. George

Summary: When sixteen-year-old Alex accepts a summer job as caretaker of an old mansion, he thinks it'll be a breeze—he plans to lay by the pool, drive around in a nice car, and meet girls. But the moment he sees the sinister-looking house he remembers why he's there: a murder suicide has left it empty and it's his job to look after things until the new owner arrives. Alone on the sprawling property, Alex becomes the victim of strange, unexplainable events and he soon realizes something is horribly wrong. He knows he is being sucked into an uncontrollable situation—a terrifying battle between two ghosts—and there seems to be no way out.

My Review: I've read this several times after I purchased it from Walden Books in the 6th grade (I'm a junior in HS now, BTW). This book is so small, but It packs a suspenseful punch. It will raise the smallest hairs on your neck! Every time I read it I still get freaked out even though I know it's going to happen which for me is a high compliment. I recommend this to EVERYONE!! I honestly don't think anyone's review would give this book justice. I demand everyone to hunt down this book and devourer it very soon!

Okay more later!
Oh, and I just joined Twitter so check it out!

Review: Enthusiasm- Polly Shulman

Saturday, February 21, 2009

| | | 1 comments

Hey!~

Well, I'm very disapointed in myself... I haven't finished a book in days, so I'm going to review some old ones- instead of actually finishing a book!

I read this a long time ago.

Title: Enthusiasm

Author: Polly Shulman

Summary: There is little more likely to exasperate a person of sense than finding herself tied by affection and habit to an Enthusiast." Julie knows from bitter experience: her best friend, Ashleigh, is an Enthusiast. Ashleigh's current fancy is also Julie's own passion, Pride and Prejudice, and the heroine's quest for True Love. And so Julie finds herself swept along with Ashleigh, dressed in vintage frocks and sneaking into a dance at the local all-boys' prep school. There they discover several likely candidates for True Love, including the handsome and sensitive Parr. And Julie begins to wonder if maybe this obsession of Ashleigh's isn't so bad after all. . . .

My Review: I actually read this before I read Pride and Prejudice. It made me want to. It's basically about two girls looking for their own Mr. Darcy with a cute twist. This book is perfect for a quick summer read, I read it one day on the swing on the front porch. I think I connected with Julie because MY best friend is easily obessed (as am I sometimes but don't tell anyone!). This book is for people who like funny, slightly romantic, and easy reads.

Okay I think I'll do More tomorrow!

Review: Ghostgirl- Tonya Hurley

Monday, February 16, 2009

| | | 3 comments
Hey!~
I just finished this about an hour ago, here's the review hope you like it!

Title: Ghostgirl

Author: Tonya Hurley

Summary:Now I lay me down to sleep,I pray the Lord my soul to keep. And if I should die before I awake,I pray the popular attend my wake.
Charlotte Usher feels practically invisible at school, and then one day she really is invisible. Even worse: she's dead. And all because she choked on a gummy bear.
But being dead doesn't stop Charlotte from wanting to be popular; it just makes her more creative about achieving her goal. If you thought high school was a matter of life or death, wait till you see just how true that is.In this satirical, yet heartfelt novel, Hurley explores the invisibility we all feel at some times and the lengths we'll go to be seen.

My Review: This book wasn't what I expected. It started off okay, then got really slow and I almost gave up on it but I still turned the pages. But it picked up and got rather exciting towards the end. The main character Charlotte got on my nerves a bit, she just wouldn't quit obsessing over the little things in life (well death really). I'm glad I read it in the long run though and can't wait to read Ghostgirl: Homecoming, which comes out on my birthday, July 1! (I have an ARC though so I may read it sooner than that). I would recomend this book to kids around 11-13 though not teens.

Well there it is. Please Please comment!!
I'm still giving away bookmarks so if you want one or maybe even two shoot me an email (with bookworm extraordinaire as the subject please so it doesn't get deleted as spam).

Review: Sucks to Be Me: The All-True Confessions of Mina Hamilton, Teen Vampire (maybe)- Kimberly Pauley

| | | 5 comments
Hey!~

I read this book on Saturday just for fun!

Title: Sucks to Be Me: The All-True Confessions of Mina Hamilton, Teen Vampire (maybe)

Author: Kimberly Pauley

Summary: Mina Hamilton's parents want her dead. (Or undead to be precise.) They're vampires, and like it or not, Mina must decide whether to become a vampire herself. But Mina's more interested in hanging out with best friend Serena and trying to catch the eye of the too-hot-for-high-school Nathan Able than in the vampire training classes she's being forced to take. How's a girl supposed to find the perfect prom date and pass third-year French when her mom and dad are breathing down her neck--literally?

My Review: I stayed up until two in the morning reading this book and it was totally worth it. This vampire book doesn't focus on vampires and that's probably why I like it so much. Sometime the vampire aspect overwelms the story but this one keeps it nice and sweet. I hope Pauley writes a sequel, I'd like to see more of Mina and her family and friends along with some vamp action. It portrays a normal teen's life (well as normal as it can be when you have vampires for parents) in a great fresh voice. I would recomend this book to everyone, who's looking for a good read.

Well there it is, I'm on to the next book!!!

Review: Sleepless- Terri Clark

| | | 1 comments

Hey!~

I am soooo behind in reviews. I have really got to review a book the moment i finish it. Does anyone else have this problem?

Title: Sleepless

Author: Terri Clark

Summary: The swaying Palms Hotel late-night room-service menu
Tuck-Me-In Tuna Salad on Rye $7.50
Catch-Some-ZZZs Cheeseburger and Fries $10.00
Up-All-Night Chocolate-Chip Cookies with Milk $5.50
Bedtime Banana Split $7.00

I can't go to sleep!!! And not because of the cute boy lying next to me. There's a killer stalking me in my dreams. And if it's up to him . . . I'll never wake up. I have to find a way to get him, before he gets me.

My Review: This book was great. I read it in like two days. Terri Clark writes like Meg Cabot which is a high high compliment. It's kind of like Lisa McMann's Wake, but in my opinion better. It's full of suspense and action, with a supernatural twist...my kind of read. This book is about dreams and I found this book stayed with me while I sleeped. Sleepless is Ms. Clark's first book and I really hope she writes more!

I would normally write more but when I did I just kept repeating how awesome it is.

Review: Wherever Nina Lies- Lynn Weingarten

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

| | | 5 comments
Hey!~

This was the first ARC that I've ever received during my reviewing career! Thanks Again, Lynn!!!

Title: Wherever Nina Lies

Author: Lynn Weingarten

Summary: Nina was beautiful, artistic, wild . . . and adored by her younger sister, Ellie. But one day, without any warning, Nina disappeared. Two years later, Ellie can't stop thinking about her sister. Although everyone else has given up hope that Nina will return, Ellie just knows her sister is out there, somewhere. If only Ellie had a clue where to look. And then she gets one, in the form of a mysterious drawing tucked into the pages of a book. Determined to find her sister, Ellie takes off on a crazy, sexy, cross-country road trip with the only person who believes she's got a chance -- her hot, adventurous new crush. Along the way, Ellie finds a few things she wasn't planning on. Like love. Mysteries. Lies. And something far more shocking -- the truth.

My Review: Wow, that's really all I can say. If I decided which books would become classics, this would be at the top of my list. This book has real life in it, it's got cussing, hysterical gay guys, thrills and chills. Any part where Ellie's friend Brad's concerned I found myself laughing so hard, I had serious tears running down my face. At points I thought I knew exactly what was going to happen next, then I'd flipped the page and freaked out because it totally wasn't what I was expecting. I have a tendency to run out of the room I'm reading in and find my mom to tell her what just happened (which I think annoys her sometimes especially if she hasn't read it or she has read it so knows it happens). I did that a lot during this book. I would just look at her and try to explain or express my feelings, but all that would come out where weird sounds. After I was done gasping she'd just say "So...good book?" and I'd nod and run back to keep reading. I can believe this is Lynn Weingarten's first book though. It has amazing writing, I wish I was this good! This book also has great pictures, really visual. This book conveys the lengths that sisters will go to be with each other. It made me wish I had a sister, not that I don't love my big brother, but he's a guy, it's just not the same. I have a feeling this is going to be one of those books that I read a million times!

So what do you think of my first review of a new-ish book? Please Comment!!!

Review: The Graveyard Book- Neil Gaiman

Wednesday, February 4, 2009

| | | 0 comments
Hey!~

Well, I finished this book last week, but I'm just posting the review now.

Title: The Graveyard Book

Author: Neil Gaiman

Summary: Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead. There are dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack—who has already killed Bod's family . . . Beloved master storyteller Neil Gaiman returns with a luminous new novel for the audience that embraced his New York Times bestselling modern classic Coraline. Magical, terrifying, and filled with breathtaking adventures, The Graveyard Book is sure to enthrall readers of all ages.

My Review: I was so disappointed in this book. It had so much potential, I mean how many books are set in graveyards? Yeah, not many. This book was just so...boring. I found myself wandering quite a bit thinking "this would be so much better if it was filled with more [insert something cool here]." I had first heard about it on Meg Cabot's Blog in November (check it out here) She boasted that it was funny and yeah it should have been, but there was only one funny bit with the poet at the almost the very end. I trust Meg Cabot and all her advice, but this book wasn't Spectacular, it was just plain old okay. Just before I started reading it I looked up some previous reviews and it seemed everyone couldn't give it enough praise. The only impression it left on me was...jeez I hope he doesn't write anymore about him, I think I'd die. it's also supposed to be a rather haunting novel, but the only truly exciting or 'scary' part was the first ten pages or so. This book really let me down. I really thought that this would be the novel I would rave about turns out I can only rant.

If you've read this book and liked it or just wasn't in to it like me. Comment I'd love to see your Point of View!

(Edited on 1-2-14: Looking back at this review I find the part where I say it didn't leave an impression ironic because since I read this book in 2009 it has haunted me. One day I might reread it and re-review it but for now I'll just leave it as it is.)

Review: The Opposite of Invisible- Liz Gallagher

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

| | | 0 comments
Hey!~

It seems like I've been reading like a book a day lately, but that's going to be stopping as the book I'm reading now is more than 200 pages long.

Title: The Opposite of Invisible

Author: Liz Gallagher

Summary: Alice and Jewel have been best friends since grade school. Together, they don’t need anyone else, and together they blend into the background of high school. Invisible. To Alice, Jewel is the opposite of invisible. Jewel is her best friend who goes to Indie concerts and art shows with her. Jewel scoffs at school dances with her. Alice is so comfortable around Jewel that she can talk to him about almost anything. But she can’t tell him that she likes the cool, popular Simon. And then Simon asks her to the school dance the same day that Jewel kisses her for the first time. Still, she can’t say no to Simon. He seems like the easy choice, the one she’s attracted to, the one she’s ready for. But will it mean losing Jewel? In a bright debut novel set against the lively backdrop of Seattle, Alice must learn the difference between love and a crush, and what it means to be yourself when you’re not sure who that is yet.

My Review: This book wasn't exactly what I expected (a cute story that was short, sweet and simple) it was more. I felt totally connected with the main character Alice. It was like I was Her. The more I kept reading the more I found that I wanted to be her friend because we had so much in common. I didn't expect to be the main character is what I'm really saying. It was creepy the stuff we had in common. I know I'm repeating myself but...wow. That's really all I have to say. I would recommend this to every really shy girl out there who doesn't want to be invisible anymore.

If you're a shy girl (or boy or anyone else for that matter) who has read this book, comment me and tell me if you feel the same way I do.

New Rating System...

| | | 0 comments
Hey!~

Guess What? I have a new rating system. Shh...don't tell anyone I stole the idea from The Story Siren's page (Kristi, if you're reading this and you mind just email me and I'll stop it).

I'm going to give Hearts instead of Stars because that's been done to many times and hearts are just more me.

So I'm going to be going back to all my previous posts and add a thingy to the end of my reviews.

To figure out what all those hearts mean just check it out the picture in the sidebar!

What do you think? Do you like the idea?

Review: Marked- P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast

Sunday, February 1, 2009

| | | 5 comments
Hey!~

There is so much I have to say about this book! It's my new obsession.

Title: Marked

Author(s): P. C. Cast & Kristen Cast

Summary: Enter the dark, magical world of The House of Night, a world very much like our own, except here vampyres have always existed. Sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird has just been Marked as a fledgling vampyre and joins the House of Night, a school where she will train to become an adult vampire. That is, if she makes it through the Change--and not all of those who are Marked do. It sucks to begin a new life, especially away from her friends, and on top of that, Zoey is no average fledgling. She has been chosen as special by the vampyre Goddess Nyx. Zoey discovers she has amazing powers, but along with her powers come bloodlust and an unfortunate ability to Imprint her human ex-boyfriend. To add to her stress, she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers: When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite group, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

My Review: This book is, in my opinion, great. I've been reading some of the reviews on some other sites and some people absolutely love it (me) and then there are some who think it suck. I think it's a new twist on vampires. I kind of like it better than Twilight, well no I like it better than New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn (books 2, 3, & 4 of the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer). But if you want a book that's very heavy on vampires don't pick this one. The only real vamp-y thing in this is bloodlust and a dislike of sun. In the House of Night series mortals aren't bitten by a vampire to become one but they are marked by the vampire Goddess Nyx. Which means anyone could become a vamp if marked, but there's a catch you have to go to a sort of training school or die. Minus the dying part, I love this idea of a vamp boarding school! However, if Marked was a movie, it would be seriously rated R. There's quite a bit swearing and has some sexual references. It's a teen-y novel, you know with bullies, cliques and stuff like that, but still good. This book is written my a mother/daughter team, but I think the daughter wrote more of it. I really want to read the rest of this series, but my library (bless it's heart) only has the first book and fourth one, so it doesn't help me much at all.

Well, that's my last review for tonight. I have to go put the finishing touches on my english project. Don't forget to comment.

Review: Doctor Illuminatus- Martin Booth

| | | 1 comments
Hey!~

This book was recommended to me by my friend Teakup at school.

Title: Doctor Illuminatus

Author: Martin Booth

Summary (not from book):Pip and her twin brother, Tim, awaken an alchemist's son from a centuries-long slumber when their family moves to an old English country estate, and he enlists them in the fight against an evil alchemist who seeks to create a homunculus.

My Review: To quote Eoin Colfer "I love this book"! I read it in 3 hours, it is a short read and perfect for someone who dosn't like commiting to long fantasy books. There's a lot of alchemy in it so if you like science you'll like it, if you don't (like me) you'll still like it if you like fantasy books. I plan on reading the sequel soon, which hear tell is even better.

Sorry this is so short but it really is only like 170 pages or so.

Review: The Lost Queen- Frewin Jones

| | | 0 comments
Hey!~

I finished this book a couple weeks ago but I'm just posting the review now. I'm really behind in reviews so there's going to be a couple posts today.

Title: The Lost Queen

Author: Frewin Jones

Summary: Tania is a princess of Faerie.
And now she must return to the Mortal World.
Once upon a time, Tania was an ordinary girl. But then she was swept into another world, where she was the long-lost princess of the elegant and magical court of Faerie, and only she could save the court from great peril.
Now Tania—and her true love, Edric—will go back to the Mortal Realm to seek Queen Titania, lost hundreds of years ago while searching for Tania.
Their return leads to struggles with Tania's much-loved mortal parents and friends as she and Edric try to conceal their secret. But much more serious dangers lurk: The sinister Lord Drake is not yet defeated, they are pursued by dark supernatural forces, and Tania's two worlds are about to collide in amazing and frightening ways she never could have anticipated.

My Review: I liked this second installment of the Faerie Path series, but I didn't love it. I will continue reading the series because I want to find out what happens, but I don't think I will re-read them. It's just not as exciting as the first one, rather predictable. It didn't pull me in like the first one. It also didn't really have an ending, it kind of just stopped without warning. So I will read the third one because I still want to know what happens. The Lost Queen was mainly in the mortal world and I think thats why I didn't really like it as much as the first, the next one The Sorcerer King is to be set back in Faerie so hopefully it gets better.

Okay thats it, on to the next one. Please comment!
