Series: Lyburn Legacy #1

Summary (goodreads.com): Kami Glass loves someone she’s never met . . . a boy she’s talked to in her head ever since she was born. She wasn’t silent about her imaginary friend during her childhood, and is thus a bit of an outsider in her sleepy English town of Sorry-in-the-Vale. Still, Kami hasn’t suffered too much from not fitting in. She has a best friend, runs the school newspaper, and is only occasionally caught talking to herself. Her life is in order, just the way she likes it, despite the voice in her head.

But all that changes when the Lynburns return.

The Lynburn family has owned the spectacular and sinister manor that overlooks Sorry-in-the-Vale for centuries. The mysterious twin sisters who abandoned their ancestral home a generation ago are back, along with their teenage sons, Jared and Ash, one of whom is eerily familiar to Kami. Kami is not one to shy away from the unknown—in fact, she’s determined to find answers for all the questions Sorry-in-the-Vale is suddenly posing. Who is responsible for the bloody deeds in the depths of the woods? What is her own mother hiding? And now that her imaginary friend has become a real boy, does she still love him? Does she hate him? Can she trust him?

My Review:
I have followed Brennan on Twitter for years because of her friendship with my spirit animal Maureen Johnson. I always meant to read one of her books but never did, until Unspoken that is. Unspoken literally jumped of a book truck at the library and hit me, I took it as a sign that I should read it. I haven't been disappointed in the least. I already knew Brennan had a sense of humor and a slight cruel streak from reading her tweets and the tweets of her fans that she has shared on her feed, but Unspoken has confirmed it. Unspoken is brilliantly funny and desperately heartbreaking. The overall concept of this book is so fantastic and creative and truly one of a kind. Kami and Jared have such chemistry and they are such well rounded characters that I felt as if I had been friends with them forever. And it’s not just the main characters that are well written! Every character in this novel has a background story and they are all important to how the novel flows. And this doesn’t bog the story down or anything, like it sometimes can, quite the opposite happens in fact: every character enriches the plot and makes this novel even more special! The plot flows nicely and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The whole book is just wonderful (except for the ending which was just cruel and I know I should have expected a cliffhanger, but I never do and I am ALWAYS CAUGHT OFF GUARD). I look forward to reading more of Sarah Rees Brennan’s books!

Summary (goodreads.com): Evie O'Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City--and she is pos-i-toot-ly thrilled. New York is the city of speakeasies, shopping, and movie palaces! Soon enough, Evie is running with glamorous Ziegfield girls and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is Evie has to live with her Uncle Will, curator of The Museum of American Folklore, Superstition, and the Occult--also known as "The Museum of the Creepy Crawlies."

When a rash of occult-based murders comes to light, Evie and her uncle are right in the thick of the investigation. And through it all, Evie has a secret: a mysterious power that could help catch the killer--if he doesn't catch her first.

My Review:
I've had a hard time reviewing this one. I can't seem to gather my thoughts about it. Not in a bad way, not at all. This is one of my favorite books. I feel like I have so many things to praise, but if you haven't read it you won't understand why I'm giving it praise! Do yourself a favor. Go read this. Just do it. Go buy it, it is worth every penny. It's a pretty thick book so it’s totally worth every cent and it also because it has so much depth. This book kept me on my toes. I fell in love with Evie and her world. I became caught up in the danger that descended upon New York in the twenties. I was astounded by the sheer amount of rich details Libba Bray added to this book that truly made it come to life for me (the amount of time that had to have gone into researching was not wasted). The only thing bad about this book was that it ended, luckily it’s a series. I look forward to reading a lot more about the world Evie lives in.
