Book Hunting Adventure: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince by JK Rowling

The story of how I found my first edition of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by JK Rowling at Henry Pordes on Charing Cross Road, London!

After successfully finding the third, fifth, and seventh books under Waterloo Bridge (read that adventure here) I only needed a copy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to complete my UK Childrens' Edition set. I was determined to find it later that day when we went to Charing Cross Road, even if I had to go into every single book shop, which is exactly what I did. I went into each shop and looked around. If their children's book section was not easily found I'd ask if they had copies of Harry Potter.

A quick photo of me on Cecil Ct!
Most didn't have any and those that did, none of them were HBP. In the third or fourth shop, Henry Pordes, I found a copy fairly quickly at the bottom of a pile. It was a nice shop with multiple rooms and high shelves. However, this shop wanted £20 for the first edition. Normally, I would fork that out no problem, but since I had just hours before bought two first editions and one early edition all for only £5 more I was leery to spend so much. I figured I would check out other shops and if I couldn't find a cheaper one I'd come back. I tried several more after that. I found one in a set of firsts that the owner wanted a few thousand quid for the set which obviously wasn't for me.

The last shop I went to was Marchpane, a shop devoted to children's books, down Cecil Ct. I was excited because I saw a copy in the window. I walked in and was immediately alarmed by the union jack covered Dalek that stood near the door. It set the tone of the room better than anything else could. It consisted of one tiny room packed with books. There was a man behind a desk that was on a risen platform. He was grunting at a couple who were asking the prices of some Alice in Wonderland books that lined his platform thing. He seemed so annoyed with them when he said they ranged from £5 to several thousand that I didn't ask any questions at first. I noticed their Harry Potter books were on the left wall behind a cart of other books. I became a contortionist to carefully extract them from their shelves to look at them. I was alarmed at the prices I saw on those covers. Several hundred pounds and they weren't even firsts!
The Dalek
By this time the couple had left and I asked Mr. Grumpypuss about the book in the window. He said he would gladly sell it to me for £800. My jaw hit the floor. I said back, “Wow, ok. I hope you sell it to some inexperience collector some day!” I planned to leave immediately, but plucked up the courage to ask to take a picture of the Dalek (who knew when I would see another terrifying alien again?).

Needless to say, once I left I told my mom to hang about in Cecil Ct. for a bit because I was going to run back to Henry Pordes and buy that extremely reasonable £20 copy of Half-Blood Prince and thus completed my UK Childrens Collection.

The story of how I found my UK Children's Editions of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Order of the Phoenix, and Deathly Hallows by JK Rowling at Southbank Book Market in London!

 On my first trip to London in 2015 I was determined to finish my collection of UK Children Editions of Harry Potter. Ideally, I wanted to find cheap editions. It didn't matter if they were first editions as long I had them. I knew that the best place to look in multiple places would be Charing Cross Road, but I wanted to try something more unique first. I'm not even sure where I first heard of the used book sale that takes place under the Waterloo Bridge, but once it was in my head I knew that it was exactly the right place to start. I had visions of stumbling across copies of Harry Potter there and would do anything to go.

I was sitting on one of those nice benches when I took this of
the market under the bridge.
Anything is practically what I gave. My mom and I got hopelessly, frustratingly lost. London (well, in my opinion England in general) is horrible with street signs. We were lost for about an hour and were miles away from our target when we finally realized what had gone wrong. I was cranky and I'm pretty sure my mom wanted to throw me in the Thames more than once. I wasn't sure that getting to this book flea market type thing was even worth it but when we finally got there I knew it was. It was such a nice, peaceful place. Right on Southbank, it is a nice place to buy books and then sit there on a bench reading them. If I lived near there I'd have no pay check because I would be there every day reading and people watching.

While searching the tables I found Prisoner of Azkaban, Order of the Phoenix, and Deathly Hallows (the later 2 were first editions)! The market was set up weird. At least weird to me, maybe because I'm not British, I'm not sure. At the first table I found one of them, snatched it up, and moved on to the next table to search. I noticed, however, that this sketchy old man kept looking at me. I was a bit freaked out, but then realized that it was because he thought I was stealing. Each table or so, though very close together, belonged to separate people. Here in the States at least, vendors have clear separations, there it wasn't nearly as clear. I did figure it out and paid the man. I paid closer attention after that and no more sketchy people bore holes into me with their gazes. All in all I bought 2 first editions and 1 early edition for a grand total of £25! It was definitely one of the most unlikely setting for such a find, but my book hunting paid off!

Book Hunting Adventure: 1st Edition Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

The story of how I found my first edition of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by JK Rowling at my local Amvets Thrift Store!

My best friend and I have a tradition of going to all of the thrift stores in our neighborhood every month or so to check them out. Rachel looks for anything and everything, while I am constantly looking for Harry Potter merch that I don't yet own. Any one who knows me knows that Harry Potter means everything to me and I will do anything to acquire anything related to it.

1st ed. UK Children's GoF
So it was no surprise to Rachel when suddenly the book she had just pulled off the shelf at my favorite thirfty was plucked from her hands before she even read the title, accompanied by a gasp and a high pitched “It can't be!” Rachel had unknowingly picked up a first edition copy of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I had recognized the spine colors. I couldn't even imagine how this book made it's way to this place, but before I could think too hard about it I immediately went to the front and bought it. There was no way I was going to let that book about of my sight until it was officially mine. That is the book that started my collection of UK Children's editions of Harry Potter.

One never knows what one will find in a thrift store if one looks hard enough. They are magical places.

Wanderlust Fuel: Harry Potter in London!

The Harry Potter films are one of the largest things that have fueled me to go to England, London specifically. Here's a list of places that inspire me to go visit London:

  • Platform 9 ¾ at King’s Cross Station- the reason behind this is, of course, obvious.
  • St. Pancras Station- seen in Chamber of Secrets as Ron flies the Ford Anglia.
  • Cecil Ct off of Charring Cross Road- perhaps the real inspiration behind Diagon Ally, Harry and Hagrid actually walk down this little alley as they approach the Leaky Cauldron in Sorcerer's Stone
  • Millennium Bridge- in Half-Blood Prince, Death Eaters tear down this bridge.
  • Old Scotland Yard- This is the visitor's entrance to the Ministry of Magic, in Order of the Phoenix there is a Red Phone Booth here. It is also where Harry, Ron, and Hermione ambush 3 Ministry workers to enact their plan to infiltrate to steal the locket Horcrux in Deathly Hallows
  • Leadenhall Market- the actual entrance to the Leaky Cauldron that Harry and Hagrid go through in Sorcerer's Stone can be found at the optician's shop at 34 Bull's Head Passage, which is painted a bright blue now.
  • Borough Market- Here one can find the Prisoner of Azkaban entrance to the Leaky Cauldron which is actually a flower shop.
  • Westminster Underground Station- here is where Mr. Weasley encountered the tricky muggle ticket machine in Order of the Phoenix
  • Australia House- this is the building that was used as a model for Gringotts Wizarding Bank.
  • 23-29 Claremont Square- stand opposite and look across at where Number 12 Grimmauld Place should be!
  • London Zoo- remember the Vanishing Glass at the beginning of Sorcerer's Stone? Here in the Reptile House is where that magical feat happened before Harry even knew he was a wizard.

Thoughts From Places/Nerdy Review: Tour Because Awesome 2

Tour Because Awesome 2

April 26th at Gramercy Theatre, NYC

 In my last blog post I wrote about the first two missions I had when I went to NYC by myself last month. This blog post is about that third mission I promised to tell you about.

Eilidh Reid's Poster!
Let’s start at the beginning, shall we? The real reason I took a nine hour bus ride by myself across the State of New York was to see Hank Green in concert at the Gramercy Theatre. I’ve been a Nerdfighter for about 5 years now and I had yet to go to a gathering, or to an event in which John or Hank would be in attendance. (For those of you who do not know what a Nerdfighter is please refer to this video.) When Hank announced that he was going on a North Eastern tour in April I knew I had to go. I looked up the tour dates, decided to go to the last show in NYC, bought my ticket immediately, and then booked a seat on the Megabus. Simple, right? Wrong. It was only after I did all that that I realized that while I had a ticket to the show and a ride to New York I had no place to stay while I was in the City. That’s when the idea hit me. Who are the people who would even go to see Hank Green in concert? Well, fellow Nerdfighters of course! And where are Nerdfighters found? The internet. And so I joined the Nerdfighters of NY group on Facebook and asked if anyone had a couch for me to crash on after the show. Ultimately, I ended up staying in a hotel instead, but just the knowledge that there would be several hundred fellow nerds at that concert made me feel 100% more confident about going.

Misson Three: Go to the Tour Because Awesome.

After leaving the Library I made my way to the hotel I was staying at a few blocks away from the theatre. Some of the Nerdfighters in my group were planning to meet up in front of the theatre at 5 to go get something to eat before the show started. When I got to my hotel it was about 4 o’clock and I was exhausted. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go an extra two hours early to the theatre to meet people I didn’t know or if I just wanted to take a nap. I was seriously considering the nap, when I thought about how the whole point of me coming to NYC at all was to go to the concert and meet fellow Nerdfighters, so I dragged my butt out of bed and walked to Gramercy Theatre. In hindsight that was the best move of my life thus far. If I hadn’t gone to the theatre when I did I would not have met the man I was there to see, Hank Green.

Me and Craig!
I approached the theatre and took a picture of the marquee sign. At first I didn’t even notice that there was already a line forming from the theatre to the end of the block. As soon as I did I went to get in line, but there was a guy standing outside the line talking to the people in line. That guy was Craig Benzine (WheezyWaiter on Youtube and lead singer of Driftless Pony Club) and I was startled! I waited until he was done talking and then asked him if I could take a picture with him! Then I turned around and WHAM! Who was standing behind me? HANK GREEN!  He was standing in the middle of the line making his way through, signing things and taking pictures and being a genuinely awesome person. So once my brain started functioning again I speed walked to the end of the line. And after about ten minutes I met Hank. I asked him to sign my copy of 13 Little Blue Envelopes (he crossed out Maureen Johnson’s name to put his own and then hanklerfished it), talked a little about how I was from Buffalo, and then I asked if I could take my picture with him. I took out my camera and turned it around so I could take the photo myself and Hank got so excited that I was using an ACTUAL camera for a selfie instead of a phone that he HUGGED me and did a really happy squishy smile. Hank Green is an amazing person.

Me and Hank!!

He wasn’t the only amazing person I met that night though. I met a ton of amazing Nerdfighters. I met some from my facebook group, I met a group of teens from New Jersey, and I met two awesome girls, M. and B. who I hung out with during and after the show. We made a group standing on the corner of 23rd and Lexington, we made a circle and just sat down. We talked about how we found out about John and Hank, where we were from, whether we were still in school or not, and which Hogwarts house we would be in. As we sat there, the line got longer and Hank eventually went back inside (with his dad! Who we surprised by one) knowing who he was and two) making a point of saying hello to him).
Me and Sam!
A little while later, Sam from DPC came out to take pictures of the crowd and somehow I was the only one who knew he was and asked for a picture with him as well. People kept walking by and asking us who we were waiting in line for and every time we said “Hank Green” we would get a blank stare and then an “oh,” which made me sad. Hank should be just as famous as other artists who have played the Gramercy, but at the same time I am glad he isn’t. He has a loyal, nerdy following that truly care about him and people in general. For example only at a concert as nerdy as this one would there be people kind enough that if someone from the very front of the crowd needed to go to the bathroom there was no hesitation that of course your spot would be saved. When the actual concert began there wasn’t that huge push of people from behind trying to get closer that usually happens at rock shows. This turned out to be a very good thing for a couple reasons. One was that it's always really annoying and the second is that standing right in front of my group was a little boy and his mom who no one wanted to squish against the gate. That little boy was Hank's nephew, his mom was the Katherine's sister in law. There was a lot of family love going on in that audience and I loved it! The Tour Because Awesome crowd was honesty the best crowd of people I have ever encountered.

As for the concert itself, it was the greatest show I have ever been to. The lineup was incredible. First there was Rob Scallion and his wicked guitar skills, then Andrew Huang with his infectious energy. After them it was Harry and the Potters, a band that both wizards and muggles alike cannot help but love and Driftless Pony Club who I absolutely adore. And finally Hank Green and the Perfect Strangers the band we were all there to see. They were all exhausted but every single one of them gave their all during that last show. Being there felt like I was a part of one giant inside joke. From the surprise visit from famous Youtubers like Hannah Hart, Grace Helbig, Tyler Oakley and one of the Gregory Brothers to Hank throwing a giant stuffed snake into the audience during Harry and the Potters’ “Save Ginny Weasley,” and from the chants of DFTBA to Hank’s encores of the theme from Ghostbusters and the Batpeople song.

Thank you to everyone I met that night for making Tour Because Awesome truly magical and of course awesome!

My Ideal Bookshelf

I got the idea for this post from the book, My Ideal Bookshelf. It asks readers to think about the books that shaped their lives. Each contributor writes a few paragraphs about why the books they chose mean so much to them. The writing is accompanied by amazing drawings of the spines of the books. I cannot do that. I tried and failed so instead I took a photo of them.

I had to think about this for months. Finally, I decided on these 6 (I count HP as one) because without them I wouldn't be me. I decided to keep my reasons short because it seems more powerful, if that makes sense.

P&P was the first “classic” I ever read. I love everything about it.

84CCR is everything I want in life.

Before I read 13LBE I never wanted to travel.

Inkheart's main plot is that characters come out of books; it is my imagination in book form.

TFIOS is the only book that has simultaneously made me laugh and cry hysterically in the same sentence.

Harry Potter is the reason I am the person I am today.

A Letter to The Boy Who Lived.

Dear Mr. Potter,

The seventh book has come and gone. We know who survives and who dies, we know who marries whom and what their children are called. We know all that and more. So why does the end of the seventh movie mean so much to us? When we turned the last page of the seventh book, to keep a level head we told ourselves "It’s not over yet! There are more movies left to watch!" Well the time has come, there are no more movies left to look forward to. It seems to all the world as if the time to say goodbye has finally arrived. But for me it hasn't. There is still Pottermore to look forward to, a place in which wands will choose us and the Sorting Hat will finally put us in our proper houses; it will provide many new words about you and your world that we have been interested in learning about for years. And of course, there are still many visits to your theme park that have yet to be planned. In the meantime, however, I will continue to re-read the books that tell your life story. I will pour over the facts provided in your old textbooks in a very Hermione like fashion. I will also read my children the same bedtime fairy tales that you are reading yours, with the same colorful embellishments that Ron added when you, yourself first heard the tales. I will relive your triumphs and mourn your losses over and over again in the years to come because as your famous creator once said "Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home".

Lots of love,

Laura.

HARRY POTTER WEEK, DAY 4!

Thursday, November 18, 2010

‘Ello!

Today’s post is not what I originally planned because that one will take a lot longer and I had/have tons of homework to do tonight. But since tomorrow is FRIDAY AKA HP7 RELEASE DAY! I will have tons of time before I actually see the movie to do Harry Potter related things, so tomorrow there will be two posts!

Today’s post is going to be centered around that lovable red headed family we all know and love the WEASLEYS!

(I love how Harry and Hermione are in this picture! this by the way is fan art i found ages ago on google.)

Which is basically my way of saying I’m going to share my favorite quotes/excerpts from them because lets face it every single one of them are hysterical in there own ways. (mostly Ron, Fred and George though)

I won't post any Deathly Hallows stuff though as to not spoil anything for non readers.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s/Philosopher’s Stone.

"Oh, are you a prefect, Percy? You should have said something, we had no idea."
"Hang on I think I remember him saying something about it, once..."
"Or twice-"
"A minute-"
"All summer-"

~~~~~~~~~~~
"You haven't got a letter on yours", George observed. "I suppose she [Mrs.Weasley] thinks you don't forget your name. But we're not stupid - we know we're called Gred and Forge."
~~~~~~~~~~

"And what if I wave my wand and nothing happens?" [Harry]
"Throw it away and punch him in the nose," suggested Ron.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Fred and George, however, found all this very funny. They went out of their way to march ahead of Harry down the corridors, shouting, "Make way for the Heir of Slytherin, seriously evil wizard coming through..."

~~~~~~~
"A Study of Hogwarts' Prefects and Their Later Careers," Ron read aloud off the back cover. "That sounds fascinating."
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Percy had what were possibly the least helpful words of comfort.
"They make a fuss about Hogsmeade, but I assure you, Harry, it's not all it's cracked up to be," he said seriously. "All right, the sweetshop's rather good, and Zonko's Joke Shop's frankly dangerous, and yes, the Shrieking Shack is always worth a visit, but really, Harry, apart from that, you're not missing anything."
~~~~~~~~~~

Ron was staring at Pettigrew with the utmost revulsion.
"I let you sleep in my bed!" he said.

~~~~~~~~
"Well...when we were in our first year, Harry-young, carefree, and innocent-"
Harry snorted. He doubted whether Fred and George had ever been innocent.
~~~~~

(Harry, just being greeted by Percy) "Harry!" said Fred, elbowing Percy out of the way and bowing deeply. "Simply splendid to see you, old boy-"
"Marvelous," said George, pushing Fred aside and seizing Harry's hand in turn. "Absolutely spiffing." Percy scowled.
"That's enough, now," said Mrs. Weasley.
"Mum!" said Fred as though he'd only just spotted her and seized her hand too. "How really corking to see you-"

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

"Yeah, someone might slip dragon dung in it again, eh, Perce?" said Fred.
"That was a sample of fertilizer from Norway!" said Percy, going very red in the face. "It was nothing personal!"
"It was," Fred whispered to Harry as they got up from the table. "We sent it."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Mad-Eye Moody?" said George thoughtfully, spreading marmalade on his toast. "Isn't he that nutter-"
"Your father thinks very highly of Mad-Eye Moody," said Mrs. Weasley sternly.
"Yeah, well, Dad collects plugs, doesn't he?" said Fred quietly as Mrs. Weasley left the room. "Birds of a feather..."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Don't be prat, Neville, that's illegal," said George. "They wouldn't use the Cruciatus Curse on the champions. I thought it sounded a bit like Percy singing... maybe you've got to attack him while he's in the shower, Harry."

~~~~~~~~~~~
"I've got two Neptunes here," said Harry after a while, frowning down at his piece of parchment, "that can't be right, can it?"
"Aaaaah," said Ron, imitating Professor Trelawney's mystical whisper, "when two Neptunes appear in the sky, it is a sure sign that a midget in glasses is being born, Harry..."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Mr. Weasley, it's Harry.. the fireplace has been blocked up. You won't be able to get through there."
"Damn!" said Mr. Weasley's voice. "What on earth did they want to block the fireplace for?"
"They've got an electric fire," Harry explained.
"Really?" said Mr. Weasley's voice excitedly. "Eclectic, you say? With a plug? Gracious, I must see that... Let's think...ouch, Ron!"
Ron's voice now joined the others'.
"What are we doing here? Has something gone wrong?"
"Oh no, Ron," came Fred's voice, very sarcastically. "No, this is exactly where we want to end up."
"Yeah, we're having the time of our lives here," said George, whose voice sounded muffled, as though he was squashed against the wall.

(NOTE: this is one of my favorite passages of ALL time)

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

"Well, we were always going to fail that one," said Ron gloomily as they ascended the marble staircase. He had just made Harry feel rather better by telling him how he told the examiner in detail about the ugly man with a wart on his nose in the crystal ball, only to look up an realize he had been describing the examiner's reflection.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Who's Kreacher?"
"The house-elf who lives here," said Ron. "Nutter. Never met one like him."
"He is not a nutter," said Hermione.
"His life's ambition is to have his head cut off and stuck up on a plaque like his mother," said Ron. "Is that normal, Hermione?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Are you trying to weasel out of showing us any of this stuff?" said Zacharias Smith.
"Here's an idea," said Ron loudly, "why don't you shut your mouth?"
"Well, we've all turned up to learn from him and now he's telling us he can't really do any of it," he said.
"That's not what he said," said Fred Weasley.
"Would you like us to clean out your ears for you?" inquired George, pulling a long and lethal-looking metal instrument from inside one of the Zonko's bags.
"Or any part of your body, really, we're not fussy where we stick this," said Fred.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Has Ron saved a goal yet?" asked Hermione.
"Well, he can do it if he thinks no one is watching him," said Fred, rolling his eyes. "So all we have to do is ask the crowd to turn their backs and talk among themselves every time the Quaffle goes up on his end Saturday."
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
"You'd think people had better things to gossip about," said Ginny as she sat on the common room floor, leaning against Harry's legs and reading the Daily Prophet. "Three Dementor attacks in a week, and all Romilda Vane does is ask me if it's true you've got a Hippogriff tattooed across your chest."
Ron and Hermione both roared with laughter. Harry ignored them.
"What did you tell her?"
"I told her it's a Hungarian Horntail," said Ginny, turning a page of the newspaper idly. "Much more macho."
"Thanks," said Harry, grinning. "And what did you tell her Ron's got?"
"A Pygmy Puff, but I didn't say where."
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Why Are You Worrying about You-Know-Who?
You SHOULD Be Worrying About
U-NO-POO -
the Constipation Sensation That's Gripping the Nation!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Aaah, George, look at this. They're using knives and everything. Bless them."
"I'll be seventeen in two and a bit months' time," said Ron grumpily,"and then I'll be able to do it by magic!"
"But meanwhile," said George, sitting down at the kitchen table and putting his feet up on it, "We can enjoy watching you demonstrate the correct use of a - whoops-a-daisy."
"You made me do that!' said Ron angrily, sucking his cut thumb. "You wait, when I'm seventeen-"
"I'm sure you'll dazzle us with hitherto unsuspected magical skills," yawned Fred.
Tom Felton’s attributes:
1) He’s British (well, so are the rest of the HP stars but still)
2) He’s Adorable
3) He’s Super Sweet (follow him on Twitter @tomfelton)
4) He’s Funny! (seriously, twitter!)
5) He plays the guitar
6) He plays the Harmonica
7) HE SINGS!
If You Could Be Anywhere. This is my favorite song of his. I love how even singing he sounds British!
Oh and how pretty is his close up Deathly Hallows Poster?
HARRY POTTER WEEK DAY 1!
Monday, November 15, 2010
| | | 0 comments
‘Ello!
Since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows comes out this Friday, I’ve decided to do a little post on his general awesomeness every day this week.
Today is a little teaser on the movie as well as a look at my favorite Harry Potter Website, Mugglenet.com
Here is a link to all the official Harry Potter videos released by Warner Brothers!
My favorites are the TV Spots.
I love Number 7 because of Fred and George, they make my life. Oliver and James Phelps are so funny! And Number 8 because of the Seven Potters scene. I cant wait to see more of BILL WEASLEY! I am SO glad they finally added him to the movies! I think they got the perfect actor to play him, he looks so much like the rest of them, he really fits in well. Oh I also like this one because of Dobby! I love Dobby, he’s so cute (I actually have his bobble head)!
And for your viewing pleasure here is the first DH Poster that was released. This is ridiculously depressing. It made me tear up the first time I saw it, but it is sorta pretty if you don’t think about the fact that its Hogwarts and its burning.
Anyway! I hope you like Mugglenet as much as I do!
Watch for tomorrow's Harry Potter post!
