The "End" of the First Riders

I thoroughly enjoyed Nicki Pau Preto's debut novel Crown of Feathers, so much so that I begged to be on the street team so that I could help promote it! In the last several months I have helped an amazing team of readers spread the word about CoF and its sequel, Heart of Flames. Now that the book is actually a real thing in my hands I am incredibly proud of it. I don't even know if that makes sense, because I had nothing to do with the writing of it, but Heart of Flames will always have a special place in my heart because of my work on the First Riders Street Team. We got to see so much of the behind the scenes process on how this book came to be including so many amazing sneak peeks at covers, commissioned art, and exclusive editions! This has been an incredible journey and I can't believe that this stage of it is over! I just wanted to thank Nicki for honoring me with a place on her team! Because of you I have crossed the Falls, made new friends, bought amazing art work (hey Franzi @snoillustrations), and I will always be a little sad that I can't have a real phoenix of my own to ride in real life. Being one of your street team has been an amazing ride!

Book Launch with Nicki Pau Preto and Joanna Hathaway!

Nicki and Joanna!

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of going up to Niagara on the Lake Public Library to the Launch Event for Nicki Pau Preto's Heart of Flames and Joanna Hathaway's Storm from the East! The journey to go the 40 miles from my house to the Library was a trek (because nothing is ever simple for me). I look a local bus downtown, caught a special bus up to Niagara Falls, walked across the Canadian Border via the Rainbow Bridge, and took my first ever Uber ride! It took 3 hours and I was frozen (I don't know how I forgot that it is always 20 degrees colder near the falls. Almost like I haven't lived here for 27 years...), but it was 100% worth the adventure!

The launch was held in an intimate meeting room, decorated with tons of paintings by local artists, several of which I would have bought in a heartbeat if I had money. I was the first to arrive and was able to grab a seat off to the side in the front row! The authors got lovely personalized book mugs from the library and the head of the teen programming facilitated the event! Fellow First Rider Raven also asked questions from Bookstagram through a livestream!

Nicki and Joanna talked about their publishing journeys. I was surprised to find out that Nicki's first agent actually dropped her because they claimed that “YA Fantasy is dead.” HA! As if! It is still one of the most popular genres around today! Nicki had always had the dream of publishing whereas it was never a true goal of Joanna's, who originally wrote for the fun of it! She was pushed by her writing group to enter a contest. A contest that she won and gained an agent through!

Both authors also addressed their worst and best parts of the journey. For Nicki, it was being dropped
by the first agent, but Joanna apparently had a truly terrible cover for her debut Dark of the West. The best thing about her publishing journey was that they got rid of that cover! (I'm intensely curious about this cover now! Joanna if you're reading this please send it to my IG!! I promise I will keep it a secret!) Nicki's dream goal of having the subscription box Owlcrate choose her book and in February 2019 that was realized and it still startles her that she got that lucky. Both Nicki and Joanna agreed that their favorite parts had just been extreme good luck!

A big part of writing fantasy is reigning in the detail when worldbuilding. Joanna Hathaway is a huge history nerd and kept trying to add more history to her books, which are fantasy based on the world wars. At one point she was told off by her editior for having a long paragraph on the differences between a Spitfire plane and a Seafire plane! “It's a fantasy world, Joanna! The Spitfire can do what the Seafire does if you need it to!!” oops! She would also become fixated with making sure the speeds of the planes were accurate, like how much sea would they cover, going at what pace, until she got so fed up she threw up her hands and declared that her imaginary spitseafire planes could just
Nicki Pau Preto and I!
move faster!!

Nicki Pau Preto also felt this type of pressure while writing Heart of Flames. She laughed, “My map doesn't match what's in my head and what I wrote in the first book before I got a map, so I'm really confused generally when trying to figure out distances now. I was googling eagle flights and doing the math. Finally I gave up and just did whatever worked with the plot.” Nicki invented things and then had to cut it. Joanna was drawing on history whereas Nicki was just doing all this to herself! She became committed to the depth of the novels and their dense history of her made up world after her editor kept saying “MORE MORE,” so basically she blames Sarah Macabe at Simon Pulse! (Joanna was clearly jealous and she would love to run wild with details!!)

A startling revelation came when asked what inspired the authors to write about their topics. It turns out that Nicki originally wanted to write about dragons, but felt with the popularity of Game of Thrones that the market would be overrun so she chose Phoenixes despite being afraid of birds! She isn't afraid of her phoenixes though, it is almost therapeutic to write about them now! It was also quite interesting to learn that Joanna chose to write about wars due to her love of history (something we have in common)!

Both authors write from multiple perspectives in their novels. Nicki has 5 POVs in Heart of Flames and said that “keeping [them] in order was challenging. It was like writing five different books, since all of the characters have to have a story and intercut!” She laughed a laugh of someone incredibly stressed out about her life choices and sighed, “I don't recommend it!”

I was fascinated to learn that one of the original two agents that offered to take up Dark of the West told Joanna that the book would be better if it didn't have the pilot, but just the princess. Since the book is told equally through Athan the pilot's and Aurelia's points of view it is alarming to think of what the books could have been. I can't speak for all readers, but I for one am so glad Joanna kept the story true to her history nerd loving self and kept Athan in. The pilot aspect is what makes her books stand out so wonderfully from the crowd!
Joanna Hathaway and I!

One of the most lovely lessons I think the authors stressed at this event was that you have to be true to the story you want to tell even when you have to sacrifice some things when you are published. Be true to what you want the story to be and trust what you're doing because it always first and foremost still has to be good to you, otherwise why are you working so hard! This especially came up when Nicki and Joanna were discussing how different it was to write one's first book vs the rest of a trilogy after the first novel is out and being consumed by the public. They agreed that writing the first book in isolation was a great help to figuring out what the story needed to be, even if you have to “write it wrong first” as Nicki said. But when it came to writing the second book they agreed there is more pressure when knowing there is an audience out there. Joanna said that she has to be careful not to be influenced by her readers even though it now “feels like a partnership. I don't want to do something so out of left field that it won't be satisfying any long because [reader and writer] are in this together now!” Nicki mentioned that as she writes the third and final book in the Crown of Feathers trilogy she is getting real time reaction from readers as they devour Heart of Flames, the second novel that was just released. At one point she found herself assuring a reader that the next books would indeed have more of the romance that readers were eager for only to realize later that she had actually cut a lot of it out! Joanna was also startled by how some readers were gunning for the long desired relationship in her books to pan out further and was worried because her characters actually won't see each other again for a large chunk of book two! The point of all of this was to reiterate that books as they are being written belong to the authors that created them. If their vision isn't fulfilled the book is kind of a moot point. I truly loved this message from them because it isn't often expressed or understood by demanding readers.

At the end of the event I asked the question that had most been on my mind while reading the Crown of Feather books and that is about Nicki's process of writing the historical documents that are scattered throughout the books and the epigraphs at the beginning of each chapter. It turns out that while working on her first book, her editor suggested adding in the documents as a way of cutting out some of the larger world building paragraphs. Now since they are expected as part of the format of
Joanna and Nicki with their readers!
her books Nicki jots down ideas for them, things she finds interesting or little tidbits that she wrote down already for herself to keep the world straight and writes them all up at the very end! She is always making up more history and always adding more to her boos to flesh them out as much as she can. She knew each chapter would begin each chapter from the very beginning, but she cannot actually write them until she knows around how many chapters the book will actually have so she is always thinking about them but not quite writing them until halfway through or so.

All of this was absolutely amazing to hear live from the authors directly! It is such a fun and lucky thing to be able to spend an afternoon and actually talk to the people who brought worlds to life on the page. After the event, the authors held a signing of their books. I hung back so that almost everyone else who attended had gone ahead so that I could spend more time with Nicki and Joanna (because I am selfish like that). It was well worth the wait! It was a pleasure meeting them both! (I actually gushed to both of them on Instagram when I posted these photos on my account @bookwormextraordinaire). I felt like I already knew Nicki through the internet so it was particularly awesome to meet her and be able to talk about the First Riders in person! And oh my gosh, Joanna was an a sweetheart! She even had me message her when I got home to make sure I arrived safely. These two ladies are as lovely as they are talented and it was truly worth the trek I made to meet them!

Heart of Flames by Nicki Pau Preto

Publisher & Release Date: Simon Pulse, February 2020
Type: YA Fantasy
Series: Crown of Feathers Book #2

Summary: Veronyka, Tristan, and Sev must stop the advancing empire from destroying the Phoenix Riders in this fiery sequel to Crown of Feathers, which #1 New York Times bestselling author Kendare Blake calls “absolutely unforgettable!”
The world is balanced on the edge of a knife, and war is almost certain between the empire and the Phoenix Riders.
Veronyka finally got her wish to join the Riders, but while she’s supposed to be in training, all she really wants to do is fly out to defend the villages of Pyra from the advancing empire. Tristan has been promoted to Master Rider, but he has very different ideas about the best way to protect their people than his father, the commander. Sev has been sent to spy on the empire, but maintaining his cover may force him to fight on the wrong side of the war. And Veronyka’s sister, Val, is determined to regain the empire she lost—even if it means inciting the war herself.
As tensions reach a boiling point, the characters all find themselves drawn together into a fight that will shape the course of the empire—and determine the future of the Phoenix Riders. Each must decide how far they’re willing to go—and what they’re willing to lose in the process.

My Review:

Holy Phoenix Fire! This book. THIS BOOOOOK!!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed Nicki Pau Preto's debut novel Crown of Feathers, so much so that I begged to be on the street team so that I could help promote it! In the last several months I have helped an amazing team of readers spread the word about CoF and its sequel, Heart of Flames.

A little part of me was afraid that I had possibly worked HoF up in my head though because of my involvement on the street team, but no. It deserves all the hype and more!! This book is a spectacular example of High Fantasy at its best. Nicki Pau Preto knows exactly how to keep readers engaged and on the edge of their seats, this reader included! This is quite the feat seeing as HoF is over 600 pages long. But while reading it didn't feel like it was a long book (except when I fell asleep reading and it fell on my face). The story moved at a good pace, with the exact right amount of action and romance and background detail. I will be the first to admit that the first book was a tad dense at times with history, but it was absolutely needed then to get readers fully immersed in this world. The build up from the first book was so helpful going into this one because I understood this place Nicki had created in such a way that I was eager to learn more. Now the history became utterly fascinating and I couldn't help but see how relevant it was and how it all tied the plot together.

One of the coolest things about Heart of Flames is that it is almost like you're reading several books at once and yet they all fit perfectly. Nicki has weaved these intricate tales in such a way that it is mindboggling that she hasn't lost track of them nor has she let the reader lose them, which is incredible. This book has five different character perspectives in the regular chapters. Then there are the documents scattered throughout that are also telling us a unique tale that will be (I'm hoping) important to the third book. I love these because it makes the whole thing feel real. Like these are real people, not just characters. They have birth certificates, and wrote letters to family, and have family trees! It is astounding the amount of relevant details that were added (shout out to Nicki's editor who just kept saying “give me more!” Bless you for letting Nicki do what she wanted!) And then there are the epigraphs at the beginning of each chapter that is in itself another story. I don't think I could ever get tired of reading these books because of the high level of world building. If I had my say these books would be studied in writing classes as a prime example of the craft!

I mentioned the five different POVs! Oh gosh, these characters are almost like friends to me at this point. I bleed when they do, I laugh along, I feel their heartbreaks and triumphs. I get incredibly stressed when reading the plot because of how it is written in the different POVs so sometimes the reader knows more than the characters do and I wish I could WARN them. Twists and turns and betrayals riddle this book and I care SO MUCH. It is rare for me to be invested in plot but these stakes are high. Nothing feels out of place or forced. It all just flows so nicely along. Nicki is a master planner.

My all time favorite thing about Heart of Flames though, and what drew me to the books originally is the Phoenixes. I work with birds so to read a book that focuses on animals makes my rehabber heart very happy. Throughout this book the plot allowed for more time with the phoenxies and I loved it. I love how they are written with such big personalities. I love that they love their riders so much. I love that they play and interact with each other. I love that they have ATTITUDES. Xephyra and Rex are my favorite characters and I am jealous that I don't get to have my own giant flaming bird with a beak the size of my head!

Have I convinced you yet to go out and read these? I hope so because Nicki is writing book three now and she has left a lot of readers just begging for more.

On Sequels!

Tuesday, February 11, 2020

I wanted to do a new kind of post today because today is an amazing day for sequels! Today 3 of my favorite debut novels are all getting sequels and I love that they get to share such a big day!

First up we have Heart of Flames by Nicki Pau Preto which is near and dear to my heart since I'm on the street team. I'm actually 200 pages into it and having a hard time putting this 600+ page tome down!
Here's a snippet of the review I posted last year, "If it isn't obvious, I can't get enough of this book. Nicki is an incredible writer and I can't wait to see where she goes next!" Well, I finally got this hot little (okay HUGE) book in my hands and LET ME TELL YOU IT IS GREAT. I got the owlcrate special edition (WHICH IS STILL FOR SALE) and it is simply stunning! Oh and be sure to watch my Instagram this week because I'm going to be giving away 2 coasters with original art by my fellow patrol member, Franzi (aka @snoillustrations on IG)!

Second we have Storm from the East by Joanna Hathaway. This is the follow up novel to Dark of the West, which I actually just finished yesterday! I was in love. This plot feels real and these characters stayed with me long after I set the book down! I am on the edge of my seat waiting to know how Ali and Athan end up! I'm also really excited because I'm meeting both Joanna and Nicki on Saturday at the Niagara on the Lake Library! More to come next week!

And last but certainly not least we have Sensational by Jodie Lynn Zdrok. Her debut Spectacle was one of my all time favorite books last year. A historical, murder mystery that left me completely enthralled! I've never wanted to visit a morgue more than while reading about the Paris one of old! This sequel promises so much more fun and murder that I am impatiently waiting for my library hold to come in! And the amazingly lovely author actually has a preorder campaign going on that includes requesting the book at your local library instead of just including those who can afford the book. If I didn't already adore Jodie this would have made me a fan!

Did I convince you? Are you going to pick any of these titles up? I hope so! Let me know in the comments or on IG @bookwormextraordinaire!

Series Spotlight: The Witchlands by Susan Dennard

The Witchlands by Susan Dennard

I am so excited to tell you that I was invited to be a part of the blog tour celebrating the new fancy schmancy boxset of the wonderful Witchland series! It came out on Tuesday and you really should check it out! It includes the first 3 core books of the series with new covers and an amazingly detailed map of the Witchlands!

Every Tuesday for the last couple months on Instagram I've been posting photos about how much I love this series! I thought I would do a round up for you folks who aren't hanging out over there yet!

But before we go into that I should probably tell you what it is about! The series is set in a world that has three empires ruling it. Everyone there is born with some kind of magical skill that is called a Witchery, hence the world being called the Witchlands! For the last two decades the three empires have held a sort of peace that was brought about by the "Twenty Year Truce." But that truce is about to come to an end, bringing back the centuries-long war! The books mostly follow 2 badass women, Safiya and Iseult! One can tell if you're lying and the other can see the threads of emotions. Together they can stop the war, so what happens when they are torn apart? (Have I hooked you yet? Honestly I was hooked the moment I read "WITCHLANDS! so if you got any farther than that I'm surprised!)

So, back to the round up! Through these posts I have found out that I am definitely a waterwitch and that if I were to have a patronus from the Witchlands it would be a Sea Fox. But what does that mean? Well, in the Witchlands everyone has a witchery. There are so many kinds but they all fall under one of six elements. Four of them are the physical elements like Earth, Water, Air, and Fire, and then two are more abstract, Void (death) and Aether (life). To find out I was a waterwitch I took THIS quiz that Susan Dennard the author of the series made. I was surprised by this because I was sure that with my work with animals I would be an earthwitch! Then the coolest thing happened. I voiced this surprise and Sooz Dennard actually commented! She said that, "maybe my waterwitchery let's me connect with animals because I'm naturally in sync with the ebb and flow of the world!" The more I think about this the more I believe that she may be a genius! That fits me perfectly! The more I learn about the world of #theWitchlands the more I fall in love with the series! And as for my Witchlands Patronus? Well it goes spectacularly with my waterwitchery! I got the Sea Fox! I took the quiz HERE and it said, "Fickle as the tides, their tempers might turn on a dime--but their hearts never will. Silky, beautiful, and awe-inspiring, no magical creature in the Witchlands is quite so alluring--or quite so clever--as the Sea Fox!"

Honestly, as cool as finding out how I would fit into the Witchlands, the witchery isn't my favorite part of the world that Susan Dennard has made for us. What I love the most is her characters. Safi and Iz are two of the strongest leads I've ever read and they are surrounded by even more badass, strong allies! I wish I lived in a world where they were in charge! I wholeheartedly recommend that you read this series! Come for the magic but stay for the connections!

The Witchlands Boxset can be found at most major retailers, irl and online! Let me know if you check them out!

Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto

Publisher & Release Date: Ink Road (Owlcrate Exclusive Edition), Feb. 2019
Type: YA Fantasy (486 pages)
Series: Book One of Crown of Feathers

Summary: I had a sister, once…
In a world ruled by fierce warrior queens, a grand empire was built upon the backs of Phoenix Riders—legendary heroes who soared through the sky on wings of fire—until a war between two sisters ripped it all apart.
I promised her the throne would not come between us.
Sixteen years later, Veronyka is a war orphan who dreams of becoming a Phoenix Rider from the stories of old. After a shocking betrayal from her controlling sister, Veronyka strikes out alone to find the Riders—even if that means disguising herself as a boy to join their ranks.
But it is a fact of life that one must kill or be killed. Rule or be ruled.
Just as Veronyka finally feels like she belongs, her sister turns up and reveals a tangled web of lies between them that will change everything. And meanwhile, the new empire has learned of the Riders’ return and intends to destroy them once and for all.
Sometimes the title of queen is given. Sometimes it must be taken.

My Review:

Crown of Feathers is an absolutely wonderful fantasy debut that I am becoming rapidly obsessed with. I will be recommending this book for years to come! I really enjoyed it!

I'm not gonna lie it had a slow start. There was some action early on and then a lot of history and exposition. The history of the world is weaved in along with Veronyka's back story as she gets to where she needs to be. At first it seemed to bog down the action because even early on I was invested with the action that was occurring, but rest assured it is all necessary and fascinating! I promise that it does pick up and once it does you won't be putting this tome down!

One of the things I love most about Crown of Feathers is that it has multiple, third person point of view chapters from a few different characters. It was a great choice on Pau Preto's part to write the novel like this because it allows the reader to know more than any of the characters at any given time. The reader becomes so incredibly invested in Veronyka, Tristan, and Sev as we try to guess how and when they will interact if ever. Each of these characters are rich with detail and I want to know them all in real life! Especially Veronyka, who has so much to offer readers by teaching subtly about inner strength and being yourself.

And of course I can't forget about the true selling point of this novel, the phoenixes that are rode into battle! I got this book through Owlcrate. The only thing I knew about this book was these phoenixes which is why I ordered my first subscription box! If you're a long time follower of my blog you know that I love animals and work closely with wildlife. This book is close to my heart because of the idea of animages, people who can communicate with not just phoenixes, but all animals. I want this gift so badly it stings. It touches on so many important ethics surrounding animals that are completely relevant today!

If it isn't obvious, I can't get enough of this book. I cannot wait to dive into the sequel. Nicki Pau Preto is an incredible writer and I can't wait to see where she goes next!

Review: Letters to the Lost by Brigid Kemmerer

Letters to the Lost by Brigid Kemmerer

Release Date: April 2017
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA Childrens
Type: Young Adult Contemporary Romance
Pages: 400
Other Titles in the Series: More Than We Can Tell (#2)

Summary: Juliet Young always writes letters to her mother, a world-traveling photojournalist. Even after her mother's death, she leaves letters at her grave. It's the only way Juliet can cope. Declan Murphy isn't the sort of guy you want to cross. In the midst of his court-ordered community service at the local cemetery, he's trying to escape the demons of his past. When Declan reads a haunting letter left beside a grave, he can't resist writing back. Soon, he's opening up to a perfect stranger, and their connection is immediate. But neither Declan nor Juliet knows that they're not actually strangers. When life at school interferes with their secret life of letters, sparks will fly as Juliet and Declan discover truths that might tear them apart.

My Review:
Holy crap! This book blew my mind. I stayed up late to read the last two thirds of the book. I haven't done that in ages.

Let me back track. Brigid Kemmerer was at TBF, but somehow in all my research I didn't realize I wanted to read her books. I noticed her book at the Barnes and Noble they set up in the gym and I bought it. When I went up to meet her and get it signed I embarrassed myself. Because, of course I did. She thanked me for getting the book and I fumbled and said I hadn't read it yet, but wanted to because I like letters. She handled the situation way better than I did. But I am so sad that I hadn't read it beforehand because I would have loved to have told her in person how much I absolutely loved it!

This was a fantastic story. I normally don't like contemporary fiction but the premise of this drew me in. This was so real, I felt like I knew Juliet and Declan, like I went to school with them. It was convincing, it left me thinking, it was so normal, but extraordinary at the same time. I don't know, you could read the book and not be blown away. You will probably not cry buckets and buckets and swear at the characters for being idiots. But I did. I did those things because the depth of the writing demanded it of me. This is very character driven. The pain of these two kids pulls you in and the suspense of their letters holds you on the edge of your seat so you can't stop reading even if you tried. I loved them both so much and I can't wait to read the story of Declan's best friend Rev.

Thoughts from Places: My Fourth Teen Book Festival in Rochester!

Sunday, May 20, 2018

| | | 0 comments
This was my fourth time going to Rochester's Teen Book Festival! This amazing event that brings authors and readers together from all over the country is pretty unique! First of all it is free, which is amazing. Teens all over fund raise to keep it that way all year long and it makes it so incredibly special. Another reason it is so special was Stephanie Squicciarini, the founder of TBF. She passed away earlier this year and is truly missed, but I think everyone could feel her there though. She put so much time and effort into making the festival as amazing as it is. She put everything she had into it and would do some really crazy things to raise funds (my favorites were dying her hair into a rainbow of colors and wearing a prom dress)! This year during the opening ceremony they did a wonderful 13 second cheer to honor her and the 13th TBF and I have got to be honest I was pretty much sobbing while I yelled my heart out. I had met her a couple times in passing throughout the years. I remember thanking her once for creating such fantastic event and she was so happy to hear that I enjoyed it. Stephanie was a truly remarkable woman and I hope TBF goes on in her memory for many, many years to come.

This year I was incredibly excited to go with two TBF newbies! I went with my friends, Allison and Katie. Rochester is a couple hours away from us so we had to leave pretty much at dawn to get there and had a great ride catching up (we've not seen each other in a while) and singing to Disney songs!
The Authors show off their fan made capes!

Most of the big events at TBF take place in the Nazareth College's Gym, including the opening ceremony with the annual game show hosted by Charles Benoit, most of the signings, the door prizes, TBF Shop, and the books that BN sells! This year all the authors had handmade TBF capes and played two facts and a fiction (which for some reason was really hard for them)! It's a great way to kick off the day!

One of the other great things that makes TBF special is that teens are 100% the focus. Teens volunteer during it, make the designs for the t-shirts and the program, have their own panel of teen authors, and most importantly they have priority seating at the panels! Usually every year there is at least one of my favorite Young Adult authors that I must meet. This year was different as it was Allison's favorite, Tamora Pierce, that we were determined to make seeing her panel with Bruce Coville a priority. So that was our first stop after the game show, but we couldn't get in as there were so many teens! Which is of course a great problem to have at a teen festival!

Roshani Chokshi and Claire Legrand during
their panel in the Chapel!
We decided that we would try again for Tammy and Bruce's next panel and went to see Roshani Chokshi and Claire Legrand! I am so glad we did because the two of them were hilarious! They were fantastic together and I truly believe that they should write a book together because it would be the funniest and creepiest thing I have ever read. Both authors talked about ideas for books that they have had that are horrible and honestly I think it made everyone feel better, because not every idea is good. They chatted about Hogwarts houses and their patronuses (Roshani is pure Slytherin with a shrew and Claire is a RavenPuff like me with an ocelot)! At one point, Roshani mentioned that her daemon would be a crow because she once almost fell off a cliff looking at a shiny shell! I also loved their advice about writing: finishing a story is the hardest thing so find the stamina to just see everything to the end and then decide how you feel about it!

By the end of that first session the three of us were starving so we headed out to see what food trucks had come! Katie and I had great poutine and Allison had some pretty good burgers! Once fed, we made our way back to see if we could get into the Tamora Pierce and Bruce Coville panel and this time we were lucky enough to be able to sit on the floor on the side of the room! Tamora and Bruce are best friends and critique partners and you can tell! They are amazing together! Allison has been telling me for years that I need to read one of Tammy's books and when I finally did in preparation for TBF I was so glad I did (I read Alanna, by the way)! Allison has every right to tell me “I told you so” because Tamora is beyond words. She is in her 60s and her health isn't the greatest but oh my gosh does that woman have spirit! She is hilarious and her friendship with Bruce is fabulous. At one point she warned a reader, “don't start with him. He will challenge you to a duel” over the proper color of a unicorn (white, obviously). They are both such characters themselves that it is no wonder that scores of people around the Globe absolutely adore them and their books! They, too, gave brilliant advice, such as always drawing a map of your setting no matter how big or small, get a partner that is honestly straight with you, and when you are stuck for an idea go back to those obsessions you had as a kid because your brain was obviously doing research when you didn't even realize it!
Bruce Coville and Tamora Pierce during their
talk!

After experiencing Tamora and Bruce, the three of us headed to a different building to hear Jennifer Castle speak. All day I had been telling Katie and Allison about how much I enjoyed her book, Together at Midnight! After hearing her talk about it and how it is about random acts of kindness they both were sold on reading it which made me so happy! Jennifer told us about how she has a key word that sums up each of her novels and how she is always thinking about “What if” to think of plots.

Then it was the big moment! The time for meeting the authors and getting autographs. After 4 festivals I have mastered how to maximize the Authors I am able to meet and the key is having a friend with you. One of you stands in the longest line while the other goes into shorter lines and then you switch! I also do not own books for all the authors I want to meet as I read a lot of books from the library, but I always have something for them to sign! A little known fact of TBF is that their website has downloadable posters of the authors that can be printed! I always do this and all the authors are always so surprised and excited! Authors I met this year include (asterisk indicates book signed instead of poster) :

Margaret Peterson Haddix signs my copy of
The Palace of Mirrors!
Jennifer Castle*
Roshani Chokshi
Bruce Coville
Margaret Peterson Haddix*
Rachel Hartman
Justina Ireland
Brigid Kemmerer*
Brendan Kiely
Alisa Kwitney
Claire Legrand*
Taran Matharu
Dana Mele
Tamora Pierce*

A question I often get is what I talk to the authors about! Well, usually I start off my telling them that it is an honor to meet them. I never forget how lucky I am to be able to have such a cool and unique experience. Before they sign or sometimes during I tell them about bits and pieces of their books that I loved! I told Claire Legrand how much I loved her ghosts in The Year of Shadows and how original they were! I mentioned to Roshani Chokshi that I loved that she mixed Hindu Mythology with Hades and Persephone legends in The Star-Touched Queen! And to Jennifer Castle, I started to cry because of how much I loved how well she wrote about kindness in her novel, Together at Midnight!
Allison and Katie meeting Tamora Pierce!
I think my favorite part of the day though was seeing Allison interact with her heroine, Tamora Pierce! I was so excited and happy for her that I almost couldn't contain it! In fact I basically didn't, as I think I talked to Tammy more about how excited about Allison talking to her than I said how much I was glad to meet her!

Teen Book Festival in Rochester is without a doubt the best book event in the World. Everyone who has been agrees. I am fortunate that I live so close and am able to go so often! I completely recommend going! Keep an eye out on my Signings page for more in depth descriptions of meeting the authors listed above as well as more photos of me with them!! They will be posted shortly!

Thoughts From Places: Turtles All the Way Down Tour

My Trip to New York City's Nerdfighteria

In October I went to New York City for a couple days to go to the Turtles All the Way Down tour with Hank and John Green. I left on a Monday night at about 10:30pm (by Megabus which was late. It's always late because it comes from Toronto and it always gets stuck at the border.) I got into the city at about 8:30am or so and started the long walk to my Hostel from 27th to 88th. I could have taken the subway but I love walking the city as I never know what I'll find. I did take a break in Times Square to people watch and around 62nd where I went to Lincoln Plaza Cinema to see Loving Vincent that movie that is completely painted in the style of Van Gogh! That wasn't a spur of the moment thing though. I have been following it's progress since they announced the movie years ago. Originally it wasn't coming to Buffalo and I thought I'd never see it but it just so happens that it was still playing in New York so I couldn't not go see it! I love seeing movies by myself. The first time I did was last year when I went to see Alice Through the Looking Glass while backpacking.
I love NYC!

I went by myself, but I met a bunch of nerdfighter friends, old and new, for a gathering before the show. I belong to the New York Nerdfighter group on Facebook. I joined it years ago when I went to the NYC stop of the Tour Because Awesome! In line for the concert I met some awesome people! Some of whom I met up with at NerdCon and again here! It was like a mini reunion! Seamus set up a pre-show gathering that I went to, but was late for! By the time I got there they had already written a bunch of nerdfighter notes and were just about to put them in John's (and Maureen Johnson's) books! One of the coolest parts of this was that Lori Earl, Esther Earl's mom was there. I had forgotten my TSWGO bracelet and she noticed and gave me one!! Lori is the mom of Nerdfighteria and is the loveliest person.

A bunch of us got food and then went to Bryant Park for a couple hours to kill time before making our way over to the Town Hall. We all sat in a circle and just talked about all sorts of nerdy things. There was about 20 or so of us. What was great though was that halfway through this other group of people came behind us and just started juggling? It must have been an agreed upon spot to practice or something, but either way it was really cool. One of our group actually abandoned us and they taught him how to juggle. I love how spontaneous NYC is. The venue was only a couple blocks away and I met up with Marie (who had my ticket, she bought us front row because she is amazing!) out front near the tour bus! We actually got to meet Rosianna Halse Rojas before we went in!
John and Hank Green!

The show itself was great. It was like watching a Vlogbrothers video live. John came out first and read a selection from Turtles. And then Dr. Lawrence Turtleman came out and gave a powerpoint presentation on Monotypic Taxa as windows into Modern Phylogeny (aka Hank in a turtle costume wearing a suit jacket). They took questions from the audience in the form of a mock Dear Hank and John episode, wherein they both forgot the format of the podcast. Hank brought out his guitar and sang a few songs. John did a tribute to Amy Krouse Rosenthal in the form of “We are here because we are here because we are here” to the tune of Auld Lang Syne that we all sang together which was sad and moving. Hank came back out and they both sang the Anglerfish song (which by the way is my favorite Hank song), All Star (because of course) and the first verse and chorus of Sweet Caroline BUT we couldn’t sing the BAH BAH BAH or the SO GOOD. It was so hard. John was so excited by the silence in the part that he literally jumped up and down around the stage. It was like his entire life was completed. As an encore they came out and sang the Mountain Goats.

As if just seeing John and Hank the night before wasn't enough, I was also invited to be in the audience for John's segment on Good Morning America the next morning. My friend Seamus was contacted by the producer to have him and 20 or so “mega Nerdfighters” come and welcome John. Seamus invited me and Marie along with a bunch of others! I had to get up at 5am, I fought with the 86th street station turnstyle, but I did get to the studio. We waited in the VIP line and got our IDs checked (to make sure we were on the list, how cool?!), and got bracelets to wear. Once in we were led to the studio. We could see Times Square out the window. Basically, taping GMA was incredibly boring and kind of annoying. Commercials are forever long. There is this guy there who is supposedly a comedian that is in charge of keeping the audience under control or whatever. He “taught” us how to clap and how to smile and made fun of us. He was actually horrible. One of the serious segments was about that horrible Weinstein or whatever his name is and the comedian fellow literally said, “and remember big smiles.” We all looked at him like he was nuts and he said, “you know appropriate smiles though.” I was so mad that this man was telling me to smile during a segment about sexual assault that I told him to eff off.
The GMA Green Room!

He must hear that a lot though or I didn't say it loud enough because he still chose me to be one of the ten that went backstage to the green room to film a commercial spot with John. That was fun. I can officially say that I met him. I was the closest to where he was sitting (about 5 feet away from him) wearing my Pizza John shirt and he said “Thanks for wearing my torso on your face. Wait, no. You know what I mean!” and he looked around and saw all of us wearing DFTBA merch and was excited that we were all real nerdfighters. He asked me if I liked the book and I responded that since I got it last night from the event that I hadn't started yet. He was excited that all of us were at the show and asked if we liked the “Sweet Caroline” bit because he wasn't quite sure. I especially assured him that it was fantastic and that I loved how excited he got over silence and that it was surprisingly satisfying.

When the 10 of us who were picked came back to the main stage the cast of Goodbye, Christopher Robin was there! Domhall Gleeson, Bill Weasley himself, was there along with Margot Robbie, Kelly MacDonald, and Will Tiltson. The show gave everyone in the audience a ticket to Goodbye Christopher Robin's Director's screening of his film that night. Originally, I was going to try to see Aladdin on Broadway (well actually I tried to win the Hamilton lottery and of course did not get it), but I had already wanted to see the movie so I couldn't pass up a free ticket.

After the taping of GMA, some of us went to a diner on 9th Ave for breakfast. It was so nice to spend time with other nerdfighters. From there a few of us went to Central Park with the intention of reading some of Turtles, but it was such a nice day so we sat at the top of this GIANT rock in near the children's playground. We sat there for what seemed like several hours but was only a few. Because we had all gotten up so freakin' early time seemed to be moving way too slow because of those extra hours. Eventually, we went to a Starbucks and actually read for a few hours before we made our way to Paris Theatre to use our free tickets. Goodbye, Christopher Robin is an amazing movie and I highly recommend it! What was cool was that the Director was there and introduced the movie! It was an incredible experience, the whole 2 days in New York was just bananas.

I'm so thankful for John and Hank for creating such an awesome and welcoming community. Even though I'm not from NYC the nerdfighters there are so kind and invite me to events even though I can't always attend.

Best Wishes and DFTBA,
~Laura!

My Review:

This review may not make a whole lot of sense because Genuine Fraud broke my brain. I don't know what I expected, but it was not this brilliant book. Not that I didn't think it would be fantastic as E Lockhart books are always, but somehow in my hype to read this I missed that it was a thriller.

Set the scene, me at Bookcon 2017 in NYC. One of the four authors I got a ticket to meet was none other than E. Lockhart and at her signing she gave away make up bags with the quote, “She became the kind of woman it would be a great mistake to underestimate” (I love this bag and I use it for art supplies and carry it everywhere) and from that I knew that this would be my kinda book! If there's something more than strong females that I love it's strong females who rock it! And I knew Jule would be a character after my own heart.

Me and E. Lockhart at BookCon 2017!
However, Jule is NOT WHAT I EXPECTED. She is wickedly talented and unfortunately I cannot say more than that because I can't spoil it for you. This book sucker punched me in the gut with the plot twists and turns. Every time I got to one of these points I had to stop reading and say to myself, “wait wait wait stop what did you just read. That did not just say that.” But it did! And I'd read even faster!

The genius in this book is that there are 2 ways to read it which I didn't realize until 3/4 of the way through. There's obviously the traditional way page 1 to page 264, the other way is numerically by chapter number which makes the book go chronologically. I recommend doing it this way AFTER you read front to back. Reading it the way Lockhart has it gives you the MAXIMUM effect of shock, reading it by chapter number after makes you realize how smart the book is!

I know that I haven't actually said much, but I hope it was enough to convince you to read this amazing, heart stopping novel! Earlier I mentioned meeting E. Lockhart at BookCon 2017. Genuine Fraud was one of the most sought after ARCs and the line to get one had at least a couple hundred in it! Meeting E. Lockhart was a great experience, she is incredibly kind and signed my copy of The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau Banks!
