Collection: The Fault in Our Stars

The Fault in Our Stars

I have a small collection of copies of The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. Unlike my Pride and Prejudice collection my TFIOS collection doesn't just contain books, it also has two different audio books, the movie adaptation DVD, and a prop from that movie! I think that this may contain ever edition printed in the US, but I could be wrong.

Pictured above from left to right:

  • First Edition, 2012.
    • This has the original cover art, featuring the now iconic black and white clouds designed by Rodrigo Corral.
    • I pre-ordered this the summer before when John Green announced that he was going to be signing every first edition of the book, all 150,000 of them. I then spent the rest of the summer watching him slowly descend into his signing psychosis. Of course, this first edition of the novel is signed by John Green in red Sharpie.

  • Exclusive Collector's Edition, 2013.
    • This cover features Rodrigo Corral's famous clouds, but instead of being what I call "TFIOS Blue" it is a beautiful metallic silver! This edition includes discussion questions and a Q&A section, most of the questions (and therefore answers) were taken from the tumblr John set up shortly after the book was released.
    • Weird story about this book: this is my second copy of it. I pre-ordered it from Barnes and Noble that day it was announced and when it came in my copy was printed wrong! Some of the Q&A section was printed interfiled within the first few chapters. I could have probably sent it back and got a new one for free but it was cool having a weird copy so next time I went to B&N I just picked up a new copy.

  • Exclusive Project for Awesome Edition, 2014.
    • Like the Collector's edition this book features the clouds but instead of metallic silver it is metallic green! This is my favorite edition by far because the entire jacket is an inside joke for nerdfighters. It has a different author photo and biography (filled with small tidbits of information that only nerdfighters would understand) and instead of praise for the book on the back it has a letter from John Green to thank readers for donating to the P4A!
    • This edition of the book was created just for the Project for Awesome, an annual 48 hour charity event that John and his brother Hank do every December. To learn more visit its website

  • Paperback Edition, 2014.
    • Classic cover, in a slightly darker TFIOS blue, featuring yellow circle with "#1 New York Times Bestseller" inside of it.
    • For two years I had been waiting for Penguin to release the paperback edition of TFIOS so that I would have an edition I felt comfortable with writing in. This is the edition I have marked up with my own thoughts.

  • Movie Tie-In Edition, 2014.
    • This cover features Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as Hazel and Augustus. It also comes with 4 color pages of stills from the movie!
    • When this book was released I realized that I had a mini collection of TFIOS building so I figured I would add this edition as well. I also adore Woodley and Elgort as the main characters I have come to love so this cover seemed perfect to me.

  • An Imperial Affliction by Peter Van Houten, 2013.
    • This is a screen accurate copy of the prop Shailene Woodley reads from in the movie adaptation! What's really cool about this book is that John only wrote a few pages of text for the movie, they just printed it multiple times in a different order to achieve this hefty 500 page book.
    • I bought this book during P4A 2014 and this is, as of right now, also the most expensive book I have ever purchased at $150, but I told my wallet that it was okay because all the money was FOR CHARITY (and it is also really cool to have a MOVIE PROP!).

  • The Fault in Our Stars DVD, 2014.
    • My copy of the movie. I adore this movie and I maintain that it is the best YA book adaptation I have ever seen, despite that they took out almost every single scene that made me love the book (ie the dinner between the Lancasters and the Waters, the entirety of Issac's eulogy, and when Issac and Hazel play Counterinsurgence).

  • Unabridged Audiobook, 2012.
    • Performed by Kate Rudd, this is the official reading of the story.
    • Confession: I have yet to listen to this version because I have been spoiled by the Limited Edition one.

  • Limited Edition Audiobook Boxset, 2012.
    • Performed by John Green, this is the nerdfighter version. This boxset includes an exclusive Hectic Glow wristband and concert ticket, postcards from various book settings, and a Q&A DVD with John. My mom pre-ordered it for me as a Christmas gift in 2011 (she is obviously the greatest).
    • I have listened to this audiobook so many times I lost count. I don't care that it was read by a then 34 year old man pretending to be a 16 year old girl. I love it because John wrote the book and therefore he knows exactly how to read each character's dialogue the way it sounded to him in his head when he wrote it. Does that make sense?

After reading all of that you're probably wondering why on earth I collect The Fault in Our Stars. The answer is simple, I love the story. I love everything about it from the characters and plot to the way John Green uses his writing in such a way that can make me laugh and then cry because of the same sentence. I love the symbolism and dialogue, the adventure and romance. I love that even though it is sad, it is incredibly real. I love that even though the main characters have cancer it isn't about that, it is really about two kids going on a quest to get answers from their favorite author and I can relate to that. If you haven't already read TFIOS I wholeheartedly encourage you to do so as soon as you can and yes you will cry, but you will also laugh and be glad you did.

As we say in my hometown: Don't Forget to Be Awesome.

Best Wishes,
~Laura!

Collection: Pride and Prejudice (Part One)

Pride and Prejudice

Seen here are the spines of my 10 copies of P&P.

I collect copies of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Why? Because I love everything about it: the story, the characters, the language, the message, and the sheer number of different covers. Pride and Prejudice is timeless.

Pictured:
  • Dover Publications Inc., 1995.
    • Cover harkens back to famous "Peacock Cover" of 1894 which was illustrated by Hugh Thomson.
    • Personally, I like this colorful version better than Thomson's (but I wouldn't say no to owning his)!
  • Penguin Group, 2005. (Notes by Viven Jones)
    • Published to celebrate the movie starring Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen.
    • This was the copy I first read. My best friend forced me to go see the movie and I fell in love with it, so I read the book and fell even deeper.

Pictured:
  • Signet Classic, 1996. (Introduction by Margaret Drabble)
    • This cover features Jane Elizabeth, Countess of Oxford painted in 1797 by John Hoppner. This information did not come the back cover or copyright page as it should have, however. All the back cover says is that it is from the Tate Gallery in London. So I went to their online catalog and searched through hundred of painting until I found her.
    • I bought this at a thrift store because a) it was a different cover, and b) someone annotated it. Maybe for school, maybe for fun, I'll never know but it excited me. I have yet to read the notes though.
  • Bantam Dell, 2003.
    • This cover features Miss Rosamond Croker (detail) by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1827). This information was found on the copyright page along with thanks to the Albright-Knox Gallery for the use of it. The Albright-Knox is in my hometown!
    • I bought this copy to annotate myself. I also found a post-it on the last page that says "-men want beauty, money, status, connections, materialistic objects. -women didn't have career. men were to work and make money."
  • Barnes & Noble Classics, 2003. (Introduction and notes by Carol Howard)
    • This cover features a close up of Berthe Morisot from Edouard Manet's The Balcony (1868).

Pictured:
  • Pocket Books, Inc., 1941.
    • Cover shows vibrantly colored Elizabeth and Darcy, illustrator not known. The edges of the book are also red like the endpapers.
    • This is the oldest copy I own at this moment for sure.
  • Books, Inc., Year Unknown
    • Year Unknown, but not for lack of trying. From the little information I could get about the "Art Type Editions, The World's Popular Classics" series is that there are a lot of books in it and not a single one has a copyright date. I can't find a single bit of information on the publisher or when they printed this series of books. Some say 1900 or during the 40s, when another says 1964. This book's age will remain a mystery for now.
    • My Aunt gave me this book along with a bunch of other books she found of my grandmother's and it is my only hard cover edition of P&P.
  • Scholastic Book Sources, 1968. (Introduction by EM Halliday)
    • The green and blue seemingly watercolor painting on the cover is not given an illustrator anywhere in the book.I like how calm this cover is.

Pictured:
  • Pemberly Digital in association with DFTBA Records, 2013. (Forward by Hank Green)
    • This is my favorite copy of P&P because it is the Lizzie Bennet Diaries Edition along with my LBD DVD set which I purchased through the Kickstarter.
    • The artwork on the cover is by Valeria Bogado who was discovered on DeviantArt by Hank after she drew some fanart for The Fault in Our Stars by Hank's brother John.
    • It has an awesome forward by Hank Green, vlogbrother and co-founder of the series, that is prefaced with a photo of him, and the actresses who play Lizzie, Jane, Lydia and Charlotte in the webseries. It also has a four page spread of the best LBD stills.
  • Evensen Creative, 2014. (Introduction, Annotations, and Artwork by Erika Svanoe)
    • This is the companion edition to Marrying Mr. Darcy: the Pride and Prejudice Card Game. It was made to explain the inspirations behind the game that Erika created.
    • I have yet to read this edition, but since playing the amazing card game, that I helped fund with it's Kickstarter campaign, I am really excited about it.

This is the first part of what will probably become an ongoing series of posts showcasing my collection. Seen above are ten different editions of Pride and Prejudice, I think with every 5 new editions I collect I will post another blog showcasing those copies.

Bookmarks Left Behind Collection

The bookmarks left behind. This photo doesn't do this collection justice. There are at least 100 diverse bookmarks, but most of them are covered.

The bookmarks in this ever expanding collection are extremely diverse and always random. The bookmarks in this collection have all been left behind by their original owners in the library books they returned. I found some of them, but most of them were found by my pages who gave them to me because I brainwashed them into it (as I trained each of the new pages I would tell them of our Wall of Stuff. Anything cool that was left behind by patrons gets put on the wall EXCEPT bookmarks which come directly to me for my collection. All of my pages are rather eager for me to have the World Record)!

Animal bookmarks found
Unique bookmarks found

  • 4 bookmarks that feature Animal Preservation Charities
  • Tiny lion magnet bookmark
  • King Tut papyrus bookmark

  • The Great Gatsby movie bookmark
  • The Kiss (VJ-Day 1945 NYC) bookmark- This is my favorite bookmark of this collection, it was given to me by one of our pages, Tess who knew I loved this photo as well as bookmarks!
  • Daisy bookmark- I love this one because daisies are my favorite flower, also because it has glitter!

Collection: Souvenir Pennies

Souvenir Pennies

My pennies in their display case!

For anyone who doesn't know what souvenir pennies are, they are pennies that are smushed and stretched on  rollers in a machine, and when it goes through any design on the rollers is engraved on the penny as the machine elongates it! The tradition of making and collecting these special pennies started at the World's Columbian Exhibition in 1893. You can learn more about them at the official website.

My first Penny.
My Penny Case!
I don’t know exactly how old I was when I got my first elongated penny, but I know I got it at the Buffalo Science Museum when I went on a field trip there with my class. Some people are very serious about collecting these pennies. I am not a Serious collector, I collect pennies from the places I've been that have the machine. I don't buy them online, I prefer to make them myself. I didn't even know it was a serious market for these things until I was at the National Museum of American History, one of the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, DC and saw a Collector's case with the website on the back.

I like these because they are cheap, fun ways to remember an experience!
(Sorry the following pictures are arranged strangely, it's the only way they would arrange on the page)

Pennies from Buffalo (my hometown):

I don't remember when I got this one.
I got this on a trip to the Zoo
in 2013 with my best friends.

I don't know where this one is from or when I got it.

I don't know where this one is from or when I got it.

I made this when I went in
2011 for the Narnia Exhibition
I made this when I went in
2011 for the Narnia
 Exhibition

I made this on a trip to
Darien Lake in 2009

Not technically Buffalo, but
made to commemorate my trip
to the Niagara Falls Aquarium
with my best friends in 2011

Most of these were made before I considered myself a collector of pennies.
I was still a child when I made these.
I consider these to be the very first thing I started to collect!
