Review: Pride and Prejudice- Jane Austen

Saturday, January 24, 2009

Hey!~

I had never really wanted to read this book before 2005. But like most things I come to love, it was forced unto me by my best friend. I went to see the 2005 version of it with her and fell in love.

Title: Pride and Prejudice
Author: Jane Austen
Summary: "Vanity, not love, has been my folly."
When Elizabeth Bennet first meets eligible bachelor Fitzwilliam Darcy, she thinks him arrogant and conceited; he is indifferent to her good looks and lively mind. When she later discovers that Darcy has involved himself in the troubled relationship between his friend Bingley and her beloved sister Jane, she is determined to dislike him more than ever. In the sparkling comedy of manners that follows, Jane Austen shows the folly of judging by first impressions and superbly evokes the friendships, gossip and snobberies of provincial middle-class life.

My Review: Okay this is the first 'classic' I ever read. It's really hard to give this a fair review because 1) it's a classic and 2) it's been done so many times. This book was first published in 1813 (give or take) so its written in an oldder version of English. So if you can't read it or don't like to read that type of English this is definitely not the book for you. P&P has so many great characters to fall in love with, Elizabeth who is headstrong, Jane, the shy one or Lydia the annoying one. But my all time favorite is Mr. Darcy, I love him and I have the t-shirt to prove it. I know you're all like " why do you love him?,"  but I really can't figure it out myself. If and when you read this book you're either going to Love it and say it's the best book ever or you're going to absolutely Hate it and throw it across the room. So, there you have it.

As always tell me what you think! Still working on the comment thing so email me (with the blog name as the subject so it won't be deleted as spam).
Don't Forget to enter the contest. Read more about it on the side of this blog.

My Tribute to... Heath Ledger!

Thursday, January 22, 2009

| | | 0 comments
Hey!~
Today marks the one year anniversary of Heath Ledger's untimely death. I've decided to write this thing about Heath because he's my favorite Australian actor (my American favorite being Johnny Depp and my English favorite being Orlando Bloom!) and because i have to get this out of my system of I'm going to be depressed for a month.

I found out at around four o'clock on this day last year about Heath's death. My best friend in the world called me and said "Heath died." i thought she meant he died as the joker, we had been talking about the movie for ages even though it wouldn't come out 'til July. But she told be he was found in his apartment dead. I thought she was lying and i may have mentioned that and she hung up. That non-existent fight lasted three days (the longest we had ever had, i say non-exsistent because she hadn't hung up on purpose). So, today sucks for a lot of reasons.

I planned on writing a biography on his amazing life but I really can't handle it.

Here's some links to some good websites if you want to read up:

3) and my new favorite- http://heathledger.com/

Heathledger.com has a tribute page, you can find the link on their site. A girl named Angel wrote a beautiful poem on &posted it on there:

One year that Heath's been gone

His legacy still carrys on

His daughter lives everyday with out him

but also has a great part of him

He is deeply missed by his family and friends

also his fans

God received a beautiful Angel

The day he received you

On this day January 22nd

This day

was way to soon

To all that really knew him

I feel of what your going through

Ignore all the negative that people choose to say

Cause you truly knew this man in many ways

Remember him the way he was

the love for him will never end

He will be there

In your thoughts...

In your dreams...

where ever you go

until the end

and when God takes you home..

May you rest in peace

my darlin Heath

Isn't that just amazing. I almost cried. You rock, Angel!

Heath Ledger has played many people, a patriot, a knight, a cop, a player, a fairy tale fighter, an outlaw, a freaky guy with bad makup a couple of scars and green hair, a skateboarder and many more. But even after seeing all those characters, i love it when he sings! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6XGUhzfutc

I'm super excited that he won Best Supporting Actor for the Joker a few weeks ago and Today exactly one year after he died he was nominated for a Oscar!

"The other big surprise of the nominations was the absence of The Dark Knight from any major categories save an expected Best Supporting Actor nod for Heath Ledger (who died exactly one year ago), though the box office hit did get eight nominations in all, mostly in technical categories."- IMDB.com
I'll leave you with this picture of Our Beloved Heath!

Review: Alcatraz Versus The Scrivener's Bones- Brandon Sanderson

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

Hey!~

Here it is as promised my review of Alcatraz the sequel! I read this a couple of weeks ago so its fresh in my mind (kind of).

Title: Alcatraz Versus The Scrivener's Bones
Author: Brandon Sanderson
Summary: The Evil Librarians are still up to their antics and it's up to Alcatraz Smedry to put a stop to it! This second book will take Alcatraz and company on an exploration of the Library of Alexandria, which -- despite Librarian rumors -- was never destroyed. It is a mysterious place and everyone knows that it holds dark secrets. Can Alcatraz, with his talent for breaking things, break into this secret world? Or will the Evil Librarians once again prevail?

My Review: Well, there were no talking dinosaurs in this one, but just as good. It's a sarcastic and snarky read for fans of books like the SoUE by Lemony Snicket or even the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer. This is the second book in the series so there's less of the whole introduction stage, we know the main characters now so there's more time for action. And there's a lot of it, action I mean. We learn more about the famous Smedry talents and about Alcatraz's father. The writing is funny and clever, and the plot moves quickly and entertainingly in unexpected directions. But be warned if you get annoyed easily, don't read this or the first one. He interrupts a lot to explain useless things. I think this series is aimed toward young boys, but really if you're a child at heart, you'll adore it.
Visit Brandon Sanderson's website, http://www.brandonsanderson.com/
to read excepts of these books and more.

Like the Review? Buy it. Rent it. Borrow it. Read it. Then TELL ME ABOUT IT!!!
(EDIT: I'm classifying this as both YA and Children's Lit because I can't decided which it is)

Review: Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians- Brandon Sanderson

| | | 0 comments

Hey!~
This is the first book I read last summer. So, I figured I'd review it now for something to do while I'm in bed sick with the flu. Having the flu stinks but being able to read all day is an added bonus!

Title: Alcatraz Versus The Evil Librarians
Author: Brandon Sanderson

Summary (from the back of the book, I think this is easier so I'm going to do this from now on): A hero with an incredible talent...for breaking things. A life-or-death mission...to rescue a bag of sand. A fearsome threat from a powerful secret network...the evil Librarians. Alcatraz Smedry doesn't seem destined for anything but disaster. On his 13th birthday he receives a bag of sand, which is quickly stolen by the cult of evil Librarians plotting to take over the world. The sand will give the Librarians the edge they need to achieve world domination. Alcatraz must stop them!...by infiltrating the local library, armed with nothing but eyeglasses and a talent for klutziness.

My Review: First off I've got to say that this is one of my favorite books. Its really funny what with all the talking dinosaurs and evil romance novels (yeah you read that right). It's definitely easy-to-read, fast-paced book. I read this book in like three hours, I laughed practically every other page and got some seriously weird looks (i was at the library for the first half hour!).The title alone had me hooked, just thinking that librarians could be evil was funny to me (Sorry, Mrs Connelly). Sanderson is obviously trying to imitate Lemony Snicket withhis style of writing, but he does a great job. He inturupts the story quite a bit to be... well, weird, it works though. I would recommend this book to people who need a good laugh every once and a while and to Librarians most off all. If you like the Series of Unfortunate Events, I'm sure you'll like this book as well. I can't wait for Alcatraz 3!

I'll be posting my review of Alcatraz Versus the Scrivener's Bones, this book's sequel soon, so check in later.

Visit Brandon Sanderson's website, http://www.brandonsanderson.com/ to see all thing Smedry!

Once again if this review made you want to visit your local library to check this great novel out or just check to see if your favorite librarians are really part of a evil cult, tell me about it!

Oh and I've heard that some people are having trouble leaving comments (the comment box isn't coming up or something equally annoying), I'm working on fixing that!

Review: Cross My Heart and Hope To Spy- Ally Carter

Monday, January 19, 2009

| | | 0 comments

Hey~

Here it is what you've all been waiting for...drumroll, please... my first review. Now keep in mind that I've never done this before so this may not be extremely critical. This is a learning process.

Title: Cross My Heart and Hope To Spy

Author: Ally Carter

Summary (from back of book 'cause I'm too lazy to make my own hehe): After staking out, obtaining, and then being forced to give up her first boyfriend, Josh, all Cammie Morgan wants is a peaceful semester. But that's easier said than done when you're a CIA legacy and go to the premier school in the world...for spies.
Cammie may have a genius IQ , but there are still a lot of things she doesn't know. Like, will her ex-boyfriend even remember she exists? And how much trouble is she really in after what happened last semester? And most of all, why is her mother acting so strangely?Despite Cammie's best intentions to be a normal student, danger seems to follow her. She and her best friends learn that their school is going to play host to some mysterious guests--code name: "Blackthorne. Then she's blamed for a security breach that leaves the school's top-secret status at risk.
Soon Cammie and her friends are crawling through walls and surveilling the school to learn the truth about Blackthorne and clear Cammie's name. Even though they have confidence in their spy skills, this time the targets are tougher (and hotter), and the stakes for Cammie's heart--and her beloved school--are higher than ever

.
My Review: I think that if you've read the first book in the Gallagher Girl series (I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have To Kill You) you're going to think this book rocks. It's got even more spy action than the first and a couple more cool guys. It's a fast read, just perfect for a rainy/snowy day. Girls will love the spies spying on their new crushes and guys will love all the spy action that Cammie and her friends get up to. The idea of a girl spy boarding school is so original, I didn't want to put it down. The story flowed perfectly until the ending. It came on rather abruptly if you ask me. Other than that it's a superb novel. I can't wait until GG3: Don't Judge a Girl By her Cover, Due in bookstores everywhere June 9, 2009!
You can read an excerpt from both Ally Carter's books at her website: http://www.allycarter.com/

So what do you think? Did this help? Did it give you the urge to run to your nearest bookstore/library? Tell me all about it.

Hi!~

This is the first of many posts I will end up putting on this new site.

You have to hang in there with me because I haven't the foggiest idea of what I'm doing.

This is supposed to be a book review blog, but I'll probably go off topic quite a bit. I tend to do that a lot.

If you want me to read a book you think is good, tell me about it. I'll see if I can check it out at the library (well as soon as I pay the zillion dollars that I owe for forgetting about those stupid audio books). If I already read it, I'll get around to reviewing it. I'm not Supergirl, so it may take awhile.
Talk later,
Rory!
